The North American Flyboard Family Weekend was held on October 18 – 20th, 2013. Gretchen and Bobby Vance of Gulf States Flyboard hosted many of the top North American Flyboarders and the first family of Flyboard Franky, Krystel and Matt Zapata in Rockwall, Texas as they gathered to celebrate the sport of Flyboarding and to shoot some incredible video. Jeff Luft help organize the event and choreograph the awesome ‘Circle’ flying while Mitch Bergsma shot some sick video that is featured throughout the official event video at the top of this page. Everyone in the Flyboard community was looking forward to this event as it definitely put the most Flyboarders in the air at one time on American water. (Lake Ray Hubbard)
The weekend started off with the Mayor of Rockwall presenting Flyboard inventor Franky Zapata and Bobby Vance of Gulf States Flyboard with keys to the city. (Franky said this hasn’t even happened to him in France yet!) Many of the Flyboarders are also dealers and instructors so it was a fantastic opportunity to meet new colleagues, share stories and strengthen the comradery within the North American Flyboard Family. Some of the top Pro Flyboarders, who will be competing next month in Doha, Qatar in the Flyboard World Cup for the USA, were flying during this event. They include Alexander Maravegias, David Soldato, Nellie Kubalek and many more!
Tanya Verlander shot FM some details on the first days action. She said “42 Flyboarders flew next to the freeway (bridge) to greet Franky Zapata! Franky got out and gave everyone a great reception, lots of waves & smiles. Then Franky hit the water & ripped the lake up.”
It was an incredible sight that stopped traffic on the bridge. As people took photos and videos Franky and fam were actually stuck in the traffic jam for a bit.
Franky commented on Facebook “Thank you very much! One of the best moments of my Life !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”
Looks like Franky was having a lot of fun throughout the weekened. Not sure how puppeteering a couple of Crash Test Dummies fit into the weekend but hey…. good times!
It was certainly an honor for everyone to fly with Franky and I’m sure he feels equally inspired by the passion and energy he witnessed first hand and which will continue to be needed as Flyboarding works to grow stronger in the United States.
Alexander Maravegias sent me his recap of the weekend which seemed action packed and featured a few heroes. Allow me to summarize:
It was a cold day one but thankfully Rick (the helicopter pilot) came through with a wetsuit and hooked us up with the tools we needed to get our double impeller on. You rock Rick! Once the 42 Flyboarders hit the water we flew to the bridge and traffic stopped and started taking pictures and videos and Franky was actually stuck in traffic for a while. Once he had a chance to greet his fleet (see the video above) he hit the water and everyone had a blast flying with him. Everyone except me until Kimberlyn jumped on the Jet Ski and got me airborne. We overcame the spills and chills and even some interference run by a Game Warden and got out there as part of the largest group of Flyboarders the World has ever seen!
Back on dry land Gretchen and Bobby took great care of everyone and we all enjoyed a BBQ dinner and then Franky and Krystel opened up a bar tab and we all REALLY enjoyed that! The next day they got a taste of Texas and shot skeet with shotguns, rifles, pistols… I think they had a blast.
Thanks Alexander for sharing, the more I hear the more I wish I was there… next year!
Great video from Charley Price. Check it out!
