CHAMPION OF THE 2014 FLYBOARD NORTH AMERICAN
CHAMPIONSHIP IS DAMONE RIPPY!
With unanimous approval both from the judges, his fellow Flyboard Family members and the Redpath Waterfront Festival crowds Damone Rippy accepted the first Flyboard North American Championship trophy. Capping the inaugural event off with five minutes of the most incredible Flyboarding the world has ever seen Damone’s hard work since Doha, Qatar clearly paid off. At 16 years young this Texas phenom was most definitely on his fellow competitors radar coming into the event but no one other than his fellow Team Aquafly members and maybe me, since I had a little video preview a month back, knew how far his flying had progressed.
His double known as the Eye of the Storm was dialed in and his suicide flip added that unique flair we expect to see in a championship winning run. The Round of 8 was really where the title was won with Damone finding himself battling world ranked number two pilot Cooper Riggs. Having to fly first thing on Sunday morning proved difficult for both competitors as their attention to detail wavered and both runs were far less impressive than the standard we’ve all come to expect from Cooper and Damone. The round went to Rippy and the lessons learned amped up his intensity for each of his following runs.
Big tricks impressed everyone but it was certainly Damone Rippy’s exceptional hose and Jet Ski management that had his fellow competitors taking notes. Flying fast while remaining fluid between tricks and comboing everything really set Damone apart throughout the competition. No dolphin went un-swagged and no pair of eyes in the crowd were looking anywhere else.
H2RO would like to congratulate all of the competitors including our Champion Damone Rippy on an incredible competition and for the exceptional job everyone did in presenting the sport of competitive Flyboarding to the world. – Blaine

Damone Rippy VERSUS Callon Burns
Caleb Gavic VERSUS Jordan Wayment
Cooper and Damone both have had better runs so it will be interesting to see who moves on. Jason Gauthier giving us some solid tricks and the tight spins. Caleb Gavic lands his double ten feet above the water, Scotty Knemeyer shows us something different with the kick spin to side flip combo. Aaron Gould put a strong run out but had ski power issues which might mean we see Aaron rerun and Caleb Gavic have the opportunity to do so if he chooses. Not sure but that might be going down. Keep your eyes on the stream.
If you’re enjoying the live stream you will have seen a nice double back flip landed by Aaron Gould. Rush Bragg started us off and the very brave Kelly Pepin having only flown a few times came out to show the crowd how easy our sport is to pick up. The action is about to get serious with this next group of pilots.
Jason Duff gave us some serious dolphin sequences and Kevin Sun with some reverse dolphins and a smooth back flip to open his run.
Scotty Knemeyer goes ridiculously big with a beautiful double back flip, landing clean above the water.
WOW… Callon Burns not letting the colder water bother this pilot from Bermuda. Amazing combos, double back flip and tight spins. Strongest run of the Qualifying Round… so far.
WHAT A DAY…. I jumped on the live stream chat and didn’t have a chance until now to share my thoughts on Saturday’s amazing action. It’s incredible the progression from the 2013 Flyboard World Cup to this weekend. 720 to double back flip combos, unique variations of huge reverse dolphins, long, stretched out supermans into backflip combos… the list of incredible moves goes on and on.
Shout outs to two guys who put in very solid runs in the Qualifying Round only to fall short by the slimmest of margins… Rush Bragg (USA) and Brody Wells (CANADA). These guys had to deal with disappointment and both did so with class, so they have my utmost respect.
Our top eight Pro Flyboarders getting ready to battle for the title tomorrow are all incredible. Toughest battle to judge leading into the top eight was the Caleb Gavic vs Ben Merrell epic dual. Both guys flew really strong runs and we wish Caleb all the best on Sunday. Ben we’ll see you killin’ it at the next World Cup.
I will post the brackets tonight. I know a battle that will be off the hook will be Cooper Riggs VS Damone Rippy. Hard to see either of these phenoms go but Cooper’s lower than he might have liked qualifying score created this epic match up in the Round of 8. Really looking forward to seeing Jason Gauthier fly again… he is a machine and the smooth technical work of Callon Burns and Aaron Gould will be on full display tomorrow in front of the thousands that are lining the waterfront to witness this historic event.
H2RO Magazine had one of our camera men out on the boat shooting back towards the crowd and we shot in slow motion so the waves and movement didn’t affect the video as much. Here is just a screen grab from a beautiful double back flip by Jason Gauthier.
As there are always anxious moments preparing for a big event like this it’s great that both the Flyboard and Redpath team members continue to work so hard to navigate through the challenges and even make some last minute improvements to the overall experience that everyone will enjoy. Media day begins bright and early at 6am and throughout the day local and national media are going to have the opportunity to learn more about our sport, our athletes and some will fly themselves. Should be a lot of fun and generate even more hype for the Championship.
Today we got the skis in the water and did a little tow across Lake Ontario which I enjoyed having lived in Toronto for eight years and never really getting to see it from that vantage point before. We also found time for a little professional dock fighting. Rules: first one without flip flops loses…. it was a draw but Daniel is claiming victory.
Making no promises we are working on some technical details tomorrow regarding live streaming the event right here on H2RO Magazine. We will also have some adjustments to the schedule to share with you.
MEDIA DAY (THURS)
Media day was a 5am wake up for the Flyboard and Redpath team but we had a great time giving Toronto a look at what our sport is all about. It’s only just begun as we fly more media at 1pm and then deliver another exciting three pilot demo at 5pm as part of the Redpath Festival kick off. This morning it was awesome having the CP24 News team interview Daniel Kaufman from Flyboard Canada and to have host Jamie Gutfreund flyboard for the first time. He did awesome and you can click here to visit the CP24 site and check out Jamie’s flight.
MEDIA DAY CONTINUES…
Well it’s officially on… on a global scale as I field media inquiries from many of the big sports networks. Here in Toronto Discovery Channel is developing a show which will feature Pro Flyboarder Damone Rippy and Mike Prince. Each interviewed with DC today in between demo shows. We’ll see what kind of exposure this Championship can bring our sport on a global scale.
MEDIA DAY RUMORS…
I know this is a tease but it sounds like there is a very good possibility that our sport is about to see some very cool new tricks debut right here in Toronto. Now that Friday is a training day for pilots to work out the kinks and the crowds on Sat and Sunday are going to get the competition rounds we are certain that extra comfort on the water is going to result in things the world of Flyboarding has never seen before… Stay Tuned!
Huge thanks to these two guys Jason Duff and Andrew Salvador and Paulina who took this photo from Cabo Flyboard. They stepped up as a H2RO Magazine sponsor and are a big reason we can cover this event for all of you.
Championship Hardware waits patiently for Sunday.
Pro Flyboarder Ben Merrell interviews on the Morning Show on Global TV… some nice Flyboard Magazine footage in there!
