XDUBAI FLYBOARD WORLD CUP COMPETITORS
The month of October has been a particularly anxious one for many in the competitive hydroflight community as athletes from around the world awaited the competitor selection for the upcoming XDubai Flyboard World Cup. With almost 100 videos submitted and only 24 Pro positions, 5 Ladies and 6 Vets up for grabs the judges had the very difficult job evaluating both completely new riders as well as known athletes throwing down for the first time on the new Pro Series Flyboard with indy feet.
We know there was some shock and disappointment from athletes who either realized that by not submitting their absolute best run they missed the cut and from some who are simply facing the new reality of higher levels of flying from many more riders around the world. We know it was hard to accept that their names would not be called to the dock.
H2RO would like to assure the community that we will continue to do our best to share the high level flying from as many athletes as possible even if their names don’t appear on the 2015 World Cup roster.
Shout out to David Soldato who damaged his knee during his video submission run. Get well soon and see you in Dubai!
Hydro Jam Session Plus CANCELLED. $30,000 in Prize Money Gone.
That’s the news we all woke up to this morning. I realized that there would be tension due to the scheduling of this second event but was hopeful for the athletes that they would still have this opportunity to do what they love and potentially take home some of the $30K in prizes that had become available. I know many of you who were excited about this opportunity and I share in your disappointment.
Here is the statement posted on Facebook by Shaw Norris of X-Jetpacks who was organizing the event:
“We regret to announce the cancellation of the Hydro Jam Session in Dubai. As of yesterday we had a total of 30K USD in cash awards for the prize purse, however by late evening, a governmental authority informed our organizer of the cancellation of their Hydro Jam Session event. We have spent the day on the phone, on IM and in email with all of the riders that had registered and expressed interest in participating in an alternative contest format in hydroflight. Sadness and frustration was expressed by the many riders, December 6th was a date that was being looked forward to for different reasons. Many were arranging travel to Dubai to see both the World Cup with their friends and attend the Jam Session. Numerous entrants in the world cup were extending stays in order to take part in the Session.
The Hydro Jam Session Dubai was intended as a trial run for an upcoming competition series to be held in North America next summer, being easier to reach for the riders. We are committed to developing new methods of riding, fair and transparent methods of judging, and making the sport able to involve audiences and advertisers and corporate sponsors. We want the athletes participating to have the best shot at turning this into a career for themselves and their families. We will continue to discuss these methods, adapt them with your comments, and share the explorations along the way. The support and friendship offered by Deep Blue Sea Diving last year was memorable, their hard work this year considerable, and we were looking forward again to the traditional hospitality that Dubai offers. As always, we look to participate in developing and participating in a sport that can grow during this critical phase to fill its potential. We thank you all for the support you have shown.”
H2RO will shift gears and focus on the Hydro Soul project that we hope will be releasing some new footage very soon. Our curiosity has been more than peaked with the early images and video of Chase Finley working with the Jaxx inflatable obstacle. Just the realization that there is creative work going on in our industry specifically focused on the evolution of the sport is very encouraging. New events are coming and 2016 will be a much more active year for hydroflight athletes around the world.
Japan Flyboard Cup 2015
For the second year in a row a National Flyboard Championship has been held in Japan. The Blue Seal Japan Flyboard Cup was held in Bibi Beach Itoman, Okinawa Japan on Oct 17th and some big names took the podium positions. The Pro Division was won by Kousuke Yokoe (H2RO World Ranked #19) with Jun Osada (H2RO World Ranked #30) taking second and Motoaki Suzuki (H2RO World Ranked #21) in third. Dong-Won Yang (H2RO World Ranked #2 Veteran) won the Veteran’s Division and congrats to Honami Yamaguchi for her win in the Ladies division.
We look forward to seeing Kousuke, Jun, Motoaki and Dong-Won fly at the XDubai Flyboard World Cup. Competition will be like nothing we’ve seen before. Jump over to our Japan Flyboard Cup page for some videos from the event.
Hydroflight Open Competition in Japan
In keeping with the competitive theme of our industry, the Japan Aquaboard Association held their first Open Competition on the same weekend as the Japan Flyboard Cup. I think schedules will shift next year but from what we’ve heard though the level of flying was of a more amateur nature. The event has helped lay the foundation for the future of our sport which is open and inclusive competitions. Of course when these events are driven by product manufacturers their are politics involved as to who will or can attend. This will eventually change as well but for now we say congratulations to JABA for providing a new venue for hydroflight athletes to show off their skills.
If we could read Japanese… here’s how it went down.
