Pro Female Flyboarders – Strength in Numbers
Summer of 2012, flying 25 feet in the air at a Flyboard demo somewhere in Alberta, Canada Pro Flyboarder Stephanie Wells decided to to beat the guys to the punch and throw her first backflip in front of a crowd roaring with approval. So pumped it was over-rotation that was the issue with landing the first few but that EMKiller attitude pushed Brody and the rest of her Alberta Flyboard crew to go big. Stephanie became the first Pro Female Flyboarder to compete in the first ever Flyboard World Cup. She more than held her own in Doha, Qatar and finished in 14th place. Stephanie Wells finished in 2nd Place at the 2014 X Dubai Flyboard World Cup.
At that time the world was still not sure what to make of Franky Zapata’s crazy new invention but we know that the ripple effect created by Stephanie’s World Cup appearance resonated and inspired the better half of the global Flyboard Community. In fact no more than six months later a student attending the Flyboard School of Stéphane Prayas began honing her skills for the 2013 Flyboard World Cup. H2RO magazine was dockside covering all the action and when Oceane Corbet took to the sky it truly was the moment the Qualifying Round got serious.
At 17 yrs old Oceane was smooth, controlled and confident throwing effortless backflips and making Team Prayas very proud. Unfortunately Stephanie Wells couldn’t attend in 2013 as she was in the middle of setting up Flyboard Puerto Vallarta so Oceane was the lone female competitor but we know we will be seeing a lot more flying from Miss Corbet in the future.
Having been immersed in our sports for over a year now it’s really great to see more and more high level female flyers posting videos and pics proving that we are not far off from seeing much more female representation at the major Flyboarding and Hoverboarding events.
Nellie Kubalek is a very strong flyer and owner of Full Throttle Flyboard who we hoped to see in Qatar in 2013 but unfortunately are still waiting anxiously for her debut.
Petra Wijnker of Flyboarding Cyprus is always working hard and looks more than ready to take on the world at the next championship.
John Albinnson mentioned Filippa Ring as a possible competitor though we have yet to see her fly but we know John so no doubt she can really soar. Let’s not forget that Krystel Zapata has been working with her husband on all aspects of our sports and hits the water regularly on both the Flyboard and Hoverboard. We are also very lucky to have Gretchen Vance driving our sports forward off the water. We know there are many, many other awesome woman out there working to grow our sports and honing their flying skills and we look forward to witnessing how they influence the evolution of our sports.
FlyGirls – Bold, Baddass and Beautiful
The first all female team of Pro Flyboarders / Hoverboarders has been formed by Flyboard Mexico. These ladies known as the FLYGIRLS are certainly beautiful but I assure you H2RO would not be sharing their story if we didn’t believe they had the talent, work ethic and dedication to our sports to truly fly at a high level. That being said I have no problem if the hardcore female pilots out there moan slightly as they read this thinking these girls are just models getting a few YouTube views but with each backflip and huge dolphin dive photo on Facebook we are becoming bigger and bigger FlyGirl Fans.
The really exciting part of all of this is that as woman around the world blaze the path for the next generation it’s those tweens and teen girls right now that love to fly and who are going to grow up with our sports as part of their lives who will take Flyboarding and Hoverboarding to very exciting places. Girls will beat boys, woman will beat men, just another exciting aspect of these new hose sports.
Are you a Female Flyboarder capable of throwing some of the big tricks or know someone we should be adding to this post? We’d love to be introduced in the comments so please take the time and share. Who will be the first lady to fly herself onto a Pro Flyboard competition podium?
