2nd doesn’t suck! Petter Berglund brought his smooth, confident flying to Qatar for the 2012 World Cup, blew some minds, and finished a very impressive 2nd place. He’s also a huge NHL fan and plays hockey so I can already see many of my fellow Canadians raising a beer glass in support the next time Petter takes to the water to compete.
H2RO Magazine Exclusive Interview
H2RO: What is your sports background and how did those skills translate to the Flyboard?
I´ve been doing sports all my life! I played ice hockey and still play with the vets. Football, tennis, golf, skiing and in the last couple of years I’ve been ski jumping! I still get high off adrenalin on every jump I do! I guess the flying and heights I achieve with ski jumping do translate to the Flyboard.
H2RO: Which athlete (any sport) has motivated you the most in your life?
Peter Forsberg, Mats Sundin! I´m a huge fan of the NHL. “Peter the great” and Sundin are such unique sport role models. Still are after retirement! Footballer Luis Figo also has been a motivator.
H2RO: What do you find most exciting about being at the forefront of a new extreme sport?
It is cool when you think of it in terms like that, a massive honor! But I must say I love the situations when people start talking about flyboard and are so excited because they’ve just seen it on YouTube and they tell me I must try it…
H2RO: What is your process for pushing the equipments limits and inventing new tricks? Do you have the ability to gauge the progression of other top riders as they work around the world?
My teammate John Albinsson, we push each other when we go Flyboarding. He’s always got the YouTube-eye on and tells me the tricks he has seen. I love to see new tricks and styles!
H2RO: Do you have a signature trick that you invented or a trick that is your favourite?
I like the “Swedish meatball” as the speaker from Doha said. Just started to try and flip from that position, hehe! I want to translate the jump and airtime from a ski jump into a raise and dive on the Flyboard. (Note to self: must ask for further explanation on what the ‘Swedish Meatball’ move is?)
H2RO: Franky continues to push the limits of his invention but which other riders do you have your eyes on these days?
Franky is the special one, the magnifique! Also the entire Flyboard Family and there are just a lot of really good riders out there!
H2RO: As a professional what events, competitions do you have on the horizon? How far do you think the world of flyboarding will have progressed by the next World Cup?
I think we will see a lot of new styles and new tricks in every World Cup over the next few years. The list of tricks is just in its infancy. The season in Sweden is just about to end and I´m looking forward to the heat in Doha in November.
H2RO: Can you share with us what the atmosphere was like at the first ever World Cup and as a competitor what you left feeling regarding the future of the sport?
Oh, it was great! I´m so excited to see all the riders and people in the Flyboard Family again! It was such a nice arrangement and kind atmosphere. As long as it is an arrangement like it was in 2012, Flyboard World Cup will be the highlight of the year for all the people involved in Flyboard – dealers, agents, riders, sponsors etc.
H2RO: What advice would you give to new riders that are trying to get their skills to the next level?
Just do it! Be strong on the board, chest up! Take a look on yourself on video before you go out again. I promise you your brain will level you up immediately! Don’t forget to warm up, smile and enjoy!
Thanks very much for this interview and we look forward seeing you fly in the next World Cup!
