Hydroflight Technology and Innovation
2016 has seen and will continue to see many new product innovations in the Hydroflight space. We have some that enhance performance, some that provide additional safety and some that do both. There are many more and we will continue to add to this post but to begin we have products from Zapata Racing, X-Jetpacks, DEFY, PowerFly Products, Flycaptain and Flyboard Malta.
Zapata Racing – U-Pipe with Double Swivel
This is one product that will have the Pros very excited as this double swivel U-Pipe means you don’t have to wait for the hose to set after tricks in order to ensure you don’t kink and stop the water flow. Zapata Racing claim that it is impossible to stop the water flow with the double swivel, that you don’t have to wait after tricks, no more hoses bursting and the hose will never twist or pinch.
Sounds like a performance enhancing product for high level athletes who push the equipment to the limits every time out.
X-Jets – Quick Release
Our sport has a great safety track record to date but there are always concerns that need addressing and so we introduce the XTR Total Release System for the Jetblade. Two modes will be offered. For accomplished riders that are comfortable in the water they have a secondary lockout by twisting the release post 90 degrees. When the T-handle post is in the locked position, it is impossible for the binding to open, even in the most extreme freestyle tricks. To open, the rider twists the T-handle 90 (or -90, 180 or 270) degrees and pull, the trigger mechanism snaps the binding open. For rider’s with less, or no experience, the lockout mechanism does not need to be engaged, quick exit is one motion, by pulling up the t-handle (or a webbing extension for those with less flexibility). Exit is immediate. For warped binding baseplates we have built the inserts into a link bar to keep a flat interface for binding swapouts. X-Jets is forecasting initial limited June deliveries.
Shotgun Dual 180 U
World introduction at this weekend’s Hydro Jam in Texas: X’s new “Shotgun Dual 180” cast alloy U for the ultimate in low turbulence redirection! Increased volume, dual optimized water flow channels split the flow into two express lanes with more power due to less turbulence. Powdercoated outside for long wearing good looks and powdercoated inside for smooth transmission. Billet CNC flanges can be upgraded or replaced when new connections are available.
DEFY – Quick Release, Booster Hose, JetDeck V2 (2 Axis)
Nick Homer introduced DEFY Waterflights binding quick release system the same day as X-Jets and so if you are flying a JetDeck you will have the ability to pinch and twist out of the baseplate if needed.
One product that is generating a lot of conversation in our industry right now is the revolutionary DEFY Booster Hose Technology. This larger 10 meter hose transitions water that is experiencing turbulent flow in to laminar flow (water moving smoothly in the same direction) and this creates such efficiency in the flow that a standard 23 meter hose can be connected to the end of the Booster Hose and there is no power loss. Here are the listed benefits straight from DEFY. Also watch for an upcoming article on the Booster Hose. H2RO got feedback on the product from Pro Hydroflight athletes Scotty Knemeyer, Ronnie Feise and Max Miller.
– 100ft+ hose lengths
– More distance from PWC for high-altitude and technical tricks
– Same power and thrust as a typical 20 meter hose
– Severely reduces “dog chain” effect
– Nearly impossible to throw loops at the ski
– Increased fuel efficiency
– water jets from dolphin dives are too far away to hit the PWC
– Reduces wear on 110mm hose as there is no leash contact
– Available for ALL hydroflight devices
JetDeck V2 (two axis)
DEFY also has added a two axis board to their line up providing customers with a great product at a lower price point. The best thing about this option is you can swap out the ‘T’ pipe for the 3 axis system hoses when you’re ready to upgrade.
Powerfly Products – BB Talkin, Ski Alert
Powerfly is always leading the way with innovative products. You won’t see a competition ski without one of their safety skins and last December at the XDubai Flyboard World Cup their team caused quite a stir as they employed the BB Talkin headset communication sparking debate as to whether that tech should be allowed in competition or new rules created to ensure it’s not used to gain an advantage. That debate aside it’s easy to see why clear and constant communication with a rider, whether at the pro level or a beginner, is an incredibly powerful tool.
The Ski Alert (Visual Warning System) by PowerFly Products is another product developed to help you protect your assets.
Many flyers today are utilizing the wireless remote, waterproof communications and music systems. With this in mind, there is nobody on the ski to notice existing warning systems that may be triggered on your jet ski. This ultra bright waterproof LED will flash along with the warning buzzer when a problem is detected warning the flyer that there is a problem. If the flyer does not realize there is a problem because they do not hear the existing warning system, this could cause significant engine damage. It will also notify you when you are low on fuel. It can easily be seen when flying around the ski, even with bright sunlight.
We have tested the Ski Alert system with Yamaha watercraft only at this time. Further testing and instructions will be tested on SeaDoo and Kawasaki watercraft in the near future.
Flycaptain – FLYPAD
The FLYPAD has just been released and looks to be a great solution for both rental operations and Hydroflight riders when it comes to providing a floating platform where riders can get in and out of their gear and even take off and land on it. A simple idea that I’m sure many in the industry will be pleased to see and try. Comes in custom sizes, colors and you can brand it.

LED Light Suit – Flyboard Malta
The LED Flyboard Suit has seen continuous development beginning with RGB Suits with all LED’s the same colour and with a few special effects controlled by a remote, DMX and WiFi. Today Flyboard Malta supply Di-Led Suits, which can also be controlled by the rider. These self-controls take the form of buttons that can be placed in hand, chest or belt to change effects. The controller takes as many sequences as one can imagine and what makes it special is that each di-Led can be programmed, making these suits totally versatile. Version 1 of the effect creator is currently available. Simply create an effect or effects, copy and paste on the supplied Micro SD Card and insert it in the controller. No programming knowledge is required. Possibilities are endless, you can select pre-programmed effects, add, edit or delete any colour, select from eight effect directions (top to bottom, left to right etc), Speed, Length, Density and Fading from one color to another.
‘THE SHARK’ by Flytronics
It sounds like Flytronics will be revealing ‘The Shark’ wireless throttle controller at Hydro Jam in Texas this weekend. We look forward to seeing it in action at Hydro Fest in Las Vegas. The Sharks predecessor is called ‘The Duck’ which is currently on the Flytronics website but we believe it will be this new version that finds mass adoption with Hydroflight enthusiasts around the world. More info to come soon…
Speaking of crazy, insane, awesome new tech that moves beyond Hydroflight to simply flight… the Flyboard Air and inventor Franky Zapata are set to crush a World Record on April 30th in France.
What other new products should we come back and add to this article? Let us know in the comments.
