Flyboard Triple Backflip is now a reality!
Damone Rippy of the USA and Suksan Tongthai of Thailand are now the only two Hydroflight athletes H2RO knows of who have landed Triple Backflips. Our original post has been updated to include the heroics of back to back Flyboard World Champion Suksan Tongthai who became the first person in competition and on video to land a Triple.
DAMONE RIPPY – FLYBOARD TRIPLE BACKFLIP
In order to transition from athlete to legend by continuously rewriting what is possible, a brave and determined individual must push past fear, self doubt, pain, falls and more falls while being fueled by a deep intrinsic desire and unwavering extrinsic encouragement and guidance in order to make the impossible possible. Sometimes it takes some luck, sometimes we see a perfect storm of physical prowess, mental toughness and opportunity… and sometimes historical milestones in sport are fueled… by high-end electronics. Yes, sometimes when the ribs have healed, the hours have been put in and the sun is ready to call it another day… a Galaxy GS5 Active seals the deal.
Damone Rippy makes Hydroflight & Flyboarding History
I’m not sure what the conversation in the car was like as Bobby and Gretchen Vance of Aquafly drove to the nearest At&T Store for a shopping trip they both not so secretly hoped they’d be having to do. I think I would have been thinking can you believe that ten months ago we were in Doha Qatar at the 2013 Flyboard World Cup where backflips were king and a World Champion was crowned without landing a ‘true’ double backflip. Fast forward a few months to the Flyboard North American Championship in June of 2014 and true double backflips were being landed by seven of the top eight competitors… Damone Rippy prevails and upon exiting the hotel lobby mentions to me the word ‘Triple’.
Here we are three months after Toronto and Damone Rippy is chillin’ with his new Galaxy GS5 Active having just stomped a clean landing, 5 ft off the water, of the first Flyboard Triple Backflip in our sports history. Now that’s not to say there aren’t other Pro Flyboarders like Suksan Tongthai, Scotty Knemeyer and Jason Gauthier with the technique and guts to eventually add it to their game too but it’s always hardest to be the first and come to think of it… this might be the first Flyboard trick not successfully landed by inventor Franky Zapata first.
Franky and the rest of the world new this day would come. It’s always some kid who just doesn’t understand why it hasn’t always just been this way… right Tony Hawk, Parks Bonifay or how bout you Travis Pastrana. Kids… harness their power for good and look at the gifts we receive.
SUKSAN TONGTHAI FLYBOARD TRIPLE BACKFLIP
When this news of Damone Rippy’s triple was originally posted it raised some debate as to whether it was legit or not. The photo along with Bobby and Gretchen Vance’s word was enough for H2RO to believe but since then we have had the 2014 X Dubai Flyboard World Cup in which Damone did not land a Triple and to date no further video evidence of a successful landing. I’m certain we’ll see video of Damone stomping a triple soon but let’s look at who did land the first successful Flyboard Triple Backflip in competition and on video Mr. Suksan Tongthai of Thailand. Suksan would go on to win his second consecutive Flyboard World Championship but the craziest thing is that when we interviewed Suksan after the event he admitted he hadn’t even attempted a triple before Dubai because the Jetski he was using to practice on didn’t have nearly enough power to pull the trick. He just visualized how he would throw it and then simply went out and stomped it.
Flyboard Triple Backflip not the only star in the sky
Now I don’t want to get so hyped up on the Triple that it becomes the only trick needed to win an entire round at a World Championship. H2RO is looking at Damone’s recent 720 to Double Backflip combo and his reversed Double Backflip to 720 ridiculousness as huge and equally important tricks come competition time. Flying around and sizing up Triple attempt after Triple attempt is not what Damone should be focusing on but if he does land it in Dubai, well that battle round is his.
The first Flyboard Triple Backflip landed by Pro Flyboarder Damone Rippy was only caught with still photos as Aquafly’s drone had a gimbal issue. What no evidence of the landing you say… fair enough. We are being assured a video of the Triple is coming but are still anxiously awaiting it. Having had the privilege of standing at the waters edge watching Damone fly in person leaves us no doubt in our mind that this landed Triple is legit. Plus I know Gretchen would not have parted with over $700 on a new phone for a not-quite-but-close trick.
It’s cool to be first but Suksan ‘Triple’ Tongthai has cemented himself as the owner of this move since he has video evidence and dropped it more than once on the World Championship stage.
