Updates from around the world of Hydroflight Sports
While we have been working on our Flyboard World Cup videos (Official Event Video below) the world of Hydroflight Sports has continued to fly along with more competitions, a major film release, entertaining the largest cruise ship in the world and new product innovation. Let’s recap…
JABA Hydroflight Comeptition in Japan
The first news comes at us from the recent 2016 Japan Aqua Board Association ( aka JABA) Championship in Nishikinohama, Osaka Japan. Along with a fantastic field of athletes from around the world it was the big US names that took the top spots in both the Free Class and World Challenge Division. Jetpack athletes Mike Traster ‘aka Thrasher’ took home a well deserved first place and was dominant from start to finish. Scotty Geltman battled hard and finished in second. The Jetboard Division saw Hydro Fest Champion Ben Merrell lead from start to finish and take first place. After getting DQ’d in his first two runs due to a hose malfunction Jake ‘JSmooth’ Orel ripped his Jetblade into second place.
Check out both Mike and Scotty in action:
Hydro Fest: Hydroflight Takes Off
Jetpack America and the Surf Channel released their 1 hour film HYDRO FEST: Hydroflight Takes Off. Dean O’Malley and Eric Longabardi played key roles in bringing the film to life and with its exclusive early viewing window closed it will now become part of the Surf Channels Video on Demand offering. H2RO had a chance to review the film so check it out here.
Jetpack from X-Jets
X-Jetpacks continues to push forward with products that maintain their #seriousmetal rep while also providing riders with a pack that is light and maneuverable. Pictured is the prototype, 100% carbon fiber frame and supports that weighs 10 kg. It breaks down into a carry-on size duffel bag which was apparently at the top of their athlete’s wish list.
The new carbon fibre baseplates for the Jetblade were also put to the test during the JABA event. Both Ben Merrell and Jake Orel rode these new plates right onto the podium.
Jetboard Front Flip to Back Flip Combination
Ran Xiao Qiang successfully executes the world’s first Jetboard frontflip to backflip combo. It’s incredible to watch and H2RO is excited to keep our eyes on this athlete and the evolution of the front flip going into the 2017 competitions. Stephane Prayas showed us the front flip technique first, followed by some great attempts by Miika Tourunen and now we’ve got Ran Xiao Qiang raising the bar!
Zapata Racing Commercial
CBS Sports Network aired a recap of the 2016 Flyboard World Cup and during the broadcast Zapata Racing ran its first ‘real’ commercial (at least that we know of). ZR marketing has largely been based on social media reach, the incredible feats of the athletes and the passion of their distributors/dealers.
HARMONY OF THE SEAS
The Aquafly Hydroflight Team booked a historic gig flying alongside the largest cruise ship in the world as it departed on its maiden voyage. 17 athletes wowed the passengers and Royal Caribbean’s crew with their Jetboard and Jetpack acrobatics. The show has sparked more much needed national and international press coverage.
H2RO Shout Outs
With athletes around the world continuing to push the limits of their sport it is not surprising that we’ve been seeing more injuries. H2RO has connected with our friends privately but also want to send healing shout outs to Gemma Weston who has a long road to recovery from a serious knee injury suffered during the Flyboard World Cup, Sonnie Bean who suffered hearing loss after a recent fall during a high dive, Aleks Skar who is on the mend from a knee hyper-extension in Naples, Rodrigo Delgado who is also recovering from a fall during a Flyboard show and Hunter Verlander who is recovering from his non-hydro related surgery. Our friends and Hydroflight family are pushing the limits everyday and these ventures come with a level of risk. We wish everyone all the best.
